I admit I have wanted to see this movie ever since the first day I watched the preview. This is just my type of movie. The previews looked fantastic. So here is a summary;
"When members of the nefarious crime syndicate KAOS attack the U.S. spy agency Control, the Chief (Alan Arkin) has to promote his eager analyst Maxwell Smart (Steve Carell) to field agent. Smart, partnered with veteran Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway), blends inexperience, enthusiasm and ineptitude as he works to thwart a world-domination plot hatched by the wily KAOS chief, Siegfried (Terence Stamp)." - From KSL.COM
Apparently, this used to be a television show. I don't think I have ever seen it in my life, and I think that points my review in a certain direction. Before I went to see this movie, I did my normal thing, checking movie reviews of my favorite movie review gurus. A lot of them were harping on this movie for not staying in line with the TV show. Well I have not seen the TV show to have it ruined by this movie, or vice versa.
I really enjoyed this movie. I always have a good time when I can go sit in a theater for 2 hours, and laugh, or chuckle, the entire way through it. Steve Carell keeps his character grounded and is funny. And unlike many others, this movie didn't have to go down the well travelled road of rude and crude humor. The humor in this is just the right style for me. It was so funny in parts that even 3 days after seeing it, I am still thinking about scenes in my head and chuckling. Anne Hathaway is fantastic in this movie, and she works very well with Steve Carell. This movie lived up to my expectations. Even Natalie said that she was having scenes replay in her head days later.
Now even though I loved this movie, I realize it's not a cinematic masterpiece. So I am taking off a 1/2 star. But despite that, I had a wonderful time watching it. And, I will buy this one when it comes out on DVD. It's getting harder and harder to find good movies that make you laugh, but don't make you feel guilty after laughing. I can't remember squirming in my seat, or dreading that I took my wife, while we watched this one. (I don't ever go without her, but, I have gotten that look before that says, "What kind of movie did you bring me too?")
Writing this movie makes me want to see it again, just because I have started laughing, out of the blue as I remember a scene.
DISCLAIMER -
I have been informed by my wife, (when I asked her star rating for this movie), that I have a "different sense of humor" than her, that I like this kind of stuff. So I am adding in that I may be weird, and you could quite possibly hate this movie and not think it was funny at all. But I hope you enjoy it.
